Installation of a non-intrusive meter helped our client check their energy consumption and save cost

Our client, engaged through the ESAP (Energy Services Acquisition Program) project in Ottawa, needed to improve energy monitoring in alignment with their mandate. The Government of Canada initiated the ESAP project to modernize the National Capital Region District Energy System, aiming to establish one of the country’s most significant public green infrastructure initiatives. The objective is to fully transition the NCR DES by 2026, achieving one of North America’s pioneering conversions of a large-scale public district energy network from steam to a low-temperature hot water system, complemented by electric chillers for cooling. 

They were tasked with implementing non-intrusive metering systems to allow end-users to accurately track energy consumption and ultimately reduce costs. Without a viable solution in place, their energy and water expenses would remain unchecked, perpetuating inefficiencies and unnecessary expenditures.  

This challenge was significant as it directly impacted their bottom line, with no current mechanism in place to gauge or optimize energy use. The client contacted us based on a recommendation from ESAP contacts. These contacts had prior experience working with us and recently learned of our representation of the Flexim solutions, a trusted name in clamp-on ultrasonic metering technology. 

A collaboration for the benefit of our client

After being approached, we conducted an initial meeting with the client to clarify their requirements and the technical specifications of the project. We collaborated closely with both the client and the plant to ensure our recommendations aligned with their needs and operational constraints. 

Our proposed solution involved the deployment of five BTU meters and five flowmeters from the Flexim product line. The specific models supplied were as follows:

BTU (British Thermal Unit) Meters :
  • 2 x F721TE with K transmitters
  • ​3 x F532TE with M transmitters
Flowmeters :
  • 1 x F721WD with K transmitters
  • ​4 x F532WD with K transmitters

These meters, featuring ultrasonic clamp-on technology, provided a non-intrusive solution that eliminated the need for pipe modifications and lengthy downtimes. 

Our clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters are designed for operational simplicity and efficiency. The transmitter attaches directly to the outside of the pipe, eliminating the need to halt operations or worry about potential leaks. Built to meet the strictest industrial standards for safety and reliability, our flow meters offer the flexibility to measure flow accurately wherever needed. 

Financial, productivity and environmental benefit of the installation

The solution's impact was immediate and substantial for the client. By empowering their end-users with precise energy measurement tools, they achieved measurable financial and operational benefits: 

Significant Cost Savings :

  • Using the BTU meters, end-users are now set to save approximately $200,000 per unit annually. 
  • Flowmeters have effectively eliminated downtime costs valued at $50,000 per year. 
  • ​Total anticipated annual savings amount to $1.275 million.
